Another fave episode from the archives features Shakuhatchi Master, Composer, and friend of mine, Shawn Head. One reason this is a favorite ep are hearing Shawn's amazing stories and learning more about my culture. Shawn has made a name for himself on Shakuhatchi, and currently lives in Japan. Since his interview in March of 2021, he's continued to build his studio, record, and more.
Shawn Head has an active career as a Shakuhatchi soloist, along with being a composer, and educator. He studied at the prestigious Cleveland Institute of Music. He also became the youngest non-Japanese Shakuhatchi master at 23. Head emphasizes the possibilities and coherence between Eastern and Western ideas; mixing the aesthetics and sensibilities of Japanese music with a Western musical framework. In 2019 he received the distinct honor of becoming an OSS Tai Shogun for his work in traditional Japanese music. He has toured worldwide, and collaborated with various artists including members of the Houston Symphony, Susanna Campbell of Shoso Duo, and the Westheimer String Quartet. Head currently performs on eight flutes specifically crafted for him by revered flute maker, Yozan Hikichi.
